Buy a Brick

Buy a Brick and help us provide more homes for people who are homeless!

We all know how difficult it is to get on the property ladder, even if we are working and have a regular income and support from our families. It is significantly more difficult for people to access any kind of housing if they have little or no income, are homeless and don’t have the support of a loving and supportive family.

The price of a one or two bedroomed flat in Southampton is currently anything between £150,000 – £185,000; renting a studio flat or a one bedroomed flat costs between £480-£780 per month. Neither of these options are easily achievable for any single person but if you are homeless and out of work, it is an impossible dream. Here at SSJ we are committed to increasing our property portfolio so that we can provide more homes for homeless people.

An ‘average’ size house is about 1,200 square feet. The perimeter of the house might be approximately 146 linear feet (25′ x 48′). Multiply that by a height of 8 feet to get a total square wall footage of 1,168, at seven bricks per square foot it will take about 8,176 bricks to build.  However it takes more than just bricks to build a house and we don’t build our own houses, but we are able to purchase properties.

As a Registered Provider of Social Housing, we can access grants from Homes England and we can access mortgages through our banking provider. We aim to house a minimum of five people in a shared house, and the cost of a property of this size is between £240,000 and £290,000.

You can help us buy more houses through our ‘Buy a Brick’ campaign. A pack of 390 bricks from a local construction materials provider costs £273 – 70p per brick. Just a £5.00 donation can pay for a square foot!

If we can raise £5,000 for every property that we purchase this helps fund the cost of refurbishment and getting the property up to the required safety standards.
