“I was always considered a serial relapser. I think I am a serial trier.”

It is one of the simplest lines in Joe's story, but perhaps one of the most powerful.

Two ways of describing the same person. One focuses on what went wrong. The other recognises something equally important: the fact that, despite everything, the person kept trying.

In our 2026 Christmas Appeal film, Joe's words challenge the way we think and talk about recovery. They remind us that people are more than their setbacks, their circumstances or the challenges they face.

Because sometimes, what looks like failure from the outside is someone finding the strength to try again.

People are more than a label

When someone experiences homelessness, poor mental health or problems with drugs or alcohol, it can become easy to define them by those circumstances.

Words such as homeless, addict, difficult or relapser can begin to overshadow the person behind them.

But no label tells someone's whole story.

It does not explain what they have experienced growing up, the challenges they have overcome or the circumstances that have shaped their life. It does not recognise the appointments they have attended, the relationships they have rebuilt or the difficult days they have managed to get through.

Most importantly, it does not tell us what that person might still achieve.

At The Society of St James (SSJ), we believe everyone deserves to be treated as an individual, with their own experiences, strengths and aspirations. Our approach is about seeing the person, not simply the problems they are facing.

Recovery is not a straight line

Rebuilding a life after homelessness, addiction or difficult experiences is rarely straightforward.

Progress can take time. There can be difficult periods, setbacks and moments when moving forward feels impossible.

In Joe's story, finding somewhere safe to live does not mean everything suddenly falls into place. He still experiences anxiety and has things to work through. He is also beginning to understand how experiences from his childhood have affected the way he feels today.

But something has changed.

He has consistent support around him, opportunities to connect with other people and the encouragement to think about what comes next.

He is considering joining the SSJ Academy walking group to help manage his anxiety, exploring training opportunities and perhaps returning to work in the future.

These are not overnight transformations. They are steps towards a different future.

And every step deserves recognition.

Seeing the person, not just the problems

One of the most important themes in Joe's story is the difference it makes when somebody takes the time to understand you.

Reflecting on his experience with SSJ, Joe says:

“Someone cared. They saw me for me. Not just my problems.”

Being treated with understanding and compassion can make a significant difference to someone's journey.

Good support is not simply about asking what is going wrong. It is about understanding what someone has experienced, recognising their strengths and helping them identify what might make the next step possible.

It is also about building relationships based on trust, consistency and respect.

For someone who has spent years feeling judged or misunderstood, having people who believe in their potential can help them begin to see that potential themselves.

From surviving to looking forward

Towards the later part of Joe's story, the way he talks about his future begins to change.

He describes feeling calmer, understanding more about his experiences and recognising the difference that consistent support has made.

He begins to look beyond simply getting through each day.

One line captures this change particularly well:

“Now I want to live again.”

It does not mean every challenge has disappeared or that his journey is complete. It means that, with the right support, he can begin to imagine a future beyond the difficulties he has experienced.

And that is what recovery can be about: creating opportunities, rebuilding confidence and helping someone find reasons to look forward.

The bed is the beginning. Everyone deserves the chance to try again.

This Christmas, our appeal is about more than providing someone with a safe place to sleep.

It is about the support that follows. The relationships that help rebuild trust, the opportunities that restore confidence and the encouragement that helps someone keep moving forward.

At The Society of St James, we believe people should never be defined solely by their setbacks.

Whether someone is taking their first step or trying again after many difficult experiences, they deserve compassion, understanding and the opportunity to build a different future.

Because sometimes, a serial relapser is also a serial trier.

Help us provide the support that makes another attempt, another opportunity and another beginning possible.

For someone experiencing homelessness, finding somewhere safe to stay is an important first step. But rebuilding a life takes more than a roof over your head. It takes time, trust and people who are willing to stand by you.
For Joe, one of the most important things about the support he receives from The Society of St James (SSJ) is something that might sound simple:

“Support from SSJ has been consistent, which is important.”
But consistency can mean everything to someone who has spent much of their life expecting people to leave, let them down or disappear.

In our 2026 Christmas Appeal film, Joe speaks openly about his experiences with abandonment and the difficulties he has faced when building trust. Before coming to SSJ, the people supporting him changed repeatedly. Just as he began to build a relationship with someone, he would have to start again with somebody new.
At SSJ, things began to feel different.

Joe describes meeting Jess, a member of the SSJ team, as an important turning point in his journey.
“They saw me for me. Not just my problems.”

More than somewhere to live

Having somewhere safe to sleep is essential, but moving away from homelessness does not mean every challenge disappears.

People may still be dealing with trauma, poor mental health, addiction, anxiety and difficult experiences from the past. There can be relationships to rebuild, appointments to attend, practical problems to overcome and confidence to regain.

That is why ongoing, person-centred support matters. Sometimes it means helping someone navigate practical challenges. Sometimes it means encouraging them to take a new opportunity. And sometimes, it is simply about being there when someone needs you. Joe describes the importance of knowing that the people supporting him will not give up.

“Jess doesn't give up on me.”

For someone who has struggled with trust and abandonment, knowing that somebody will continue to show up can make it easier to build relationships, ask for help and begin looking towards the future.

What happens when trust begins to grow?

Positive change does not always happen overnight. It can start with small moments: feeling comfortable enough to talk, asking for help, going somewhere new or finding the confidence to try something different.

At SSJ, we recognise these moments as important milestones. We sometimes call them a 'lightbulb moment' – when someone begins to see new possibilities for themselves.

For Joe, that means thinking about what he wants to achieve next. He is planning to join the SSJ Academy walking group to help manage his anxiety. There are also conversations about training, developing new skills and perhaps eventually returning to work.

These might seem like small steps, but they can create structure, confidence, connection and a renewed sense of purpose.
Most importantly, they show what can become possible when someone has the right support around them.

The bed is the beginning. Consistent support helps build what comes next.

This Christmas, our message is about understanding that ending homelessness means more than providing somewhere to sleep. A bed creates safety. But rebuilding a life takes time, understanding and consistent support.

At The Society of St James, we work alongside people experiencing homelessness and other challenges, helping them take steps towards stability, independence and a brighter future.
Your donation to our Christmas Appeal helps us continue providing the support that makes these journeys possible across Hampshire, Portsmouth and Southampton.

Please help us continue to be there for people when they need us most.

For someone experiencing homelessness, finding a safe place to sleep can change everything. But what happens next?

In our Christmas Appeal film for 2026, we meet Joe, whose story reflects the real experiences of people supported by The Society of St James (SSJ). One moment captures something simple but powerful: Joe standing at a sink, surrounded by Christmas washing up, smiling as he says:

“I literally don’t care – means I ain’t homeless.”

It might seem like an ordinary domestic moment, but for someone who has spent nights sleeping outside, feeling cold, wet and unsafe, having somewhere to call home means so much more.

It means security. It means having somewhere to return to. And it means having the opportunity to start again.

Coming off the streets is just the beginning

Leaving homelessness behind is not always straightforward. The experiences that lead someone to homelessness, and those they face while living on the streets, can have a lasting impact.

People may be dealing with trauma, poor mental health, addiction, broken relationships and a loss of trust. Finding accommodation is an important first step, but these challenges do not simply disappear when someone gets a key.

That is why support beyond providing a bed is so important.

At SSJ, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to rebuild their life, with the right support, understanding and encouragement along the way.

The importance of being seen as a person, not a problem

In Joe’s story, meeting Jess, a member of the SSJ team, becomes an important turning point.

He describes what it means to have someone who listens, understands and sees him as an individual rather than defining him by his circumstances.

Building trust takes time. For someone who may have experienced difficult relationships, rejection or years of uncertainty, having consistent support can make a real difference.

It is about more than providing practical help. It is about building relationships, recognising individual needs and helping someone feel that their future can be different.

Small steps can lead to a brighter future

With a safe place to stay and the right support around him, Joe can begin thinking about what comes next.

He is planning to join the SSJ Academy walking group to help manage his anxiety. There are also conversations about training, developing new skills and potentially moving into employment in the future.

These might seem like small steps, but they represent something much bigger: confidence, independence and the possibility of a new direction.

Recovery and rebuilding a life do not happen overnight. Everyone's journey is different, and progress does not always follow a straight line. Sometimes, the biggest achievements begin with the smallest changes.

The bed is the beginning. Your support makes the next steps possible.

This Christmas, our message is simple: The bed is the beginning.

A safe place to sleep can provide the foundation someone needs to start rebuilding their life. But it is the ongoing support, care and opportunities that help make a lasting difference.

Your donation can help The Society of St James continue supporting people experiencing homelessness, helping them move towards greater stability, independence and a future beyond homelessness.

Whether it is a one-off donation or regular support, every contribution can help someone take their next step.

Help someone build a future beyond homelessness this Christmas.

DONATE TODAY – Support The Society of St James

Together, we can help make sure that finding a bed is not where someone's story ends, but where a new chapter begins.
