Tackling homelessness in Portsmouth

Tackling homelessness in Portsmouth

Key Aspects of the Portsmouth Rough Sleeping Pathway:

The Portsmouth Rough Sleeping Pathway is a comprehensive and collaborative initiative designed to support individuals experiencing homelessness or at risk of it. The Society of St. James plays a central role as the principal housing partner, specifically managing the pathway's accommodation provisions.

  • Rough Sleeping Hub: This is the crucial first point of contact for individuals experiencing street homelessness or at risk of it. The hub provides immediate and essential support.
  • Support Services: The hub provides practical support, including breakfast, showers, laundry facilities, internet access, and crucial help with immediate needs like welfare benefits, GP registration, and substance misuse issues.
  • Accommodation (Managed by the Society of St. James as Principal Housing Partner): The pathway offers over 100 bed spaces across the city. As the principal housing partner, the Society of St. James is instrumental in managing and securing these suitable and sustainable housing options, with the aim of supporting individuals to positively move on.
  • Partnership Approach: The pathway is a collaborative effort, involving various agencies, voluntary groups, and individuals with lived experience of homelessness. The Society of St. James is a key and central partner in this multi-agency approach, particularly in providing housing solutions.
  • Outreach Services: Council outreach teams actively seek out and engage with individuals sleeping rough, connecting them with the support available through the pathway, including the accommodation managed by the Society of St. James.
  • Prevention: The strategy focuses on preventing homelessness in the first place, by addressing the root causes and providing early intervention. The comprehensive support services contribute significantly to this preventative approach.
  • Ending Rough Sleeping: The overarching aim is to ensure that rough sleeping is rare, brief, and non-recurring in Portsmouth, a goal strongly supported by the Society of St. James's crucial role in providing housing.
