World Homeless Day + World Mental Health Day: Ending homelessness, supporting mental health

The reasons someone becomes homeless are complex and varied. Rarely is homelessness the result of a single event or circumstance. For many people, significant mental health challenges, alongside other pressures such as financial hardship, relationship breakdown, trauma or substance use, can play a role long before they find themselves sleeping on the street, living in their car or staying on someone’s sofa.

As we mark World Homeless Day and World Mental Health Day on 10 October, we’re inviting everyone who lives or works in Hampshire to be part of our community and take a stand to end homelessness.

The idea of ending homelessness can feel overwhelming. But change is possible. At SSJ, we support hundreds of people every year to take steps towards ending their homelessness - and, where possible, prevent homelessness from happening in the first place.

Every year, SSJ supports more than 3,500 people, providing a range of support that helps people look after their mental and physical wellbeing, reduce substance use and harm, build resilience, and know where to turn when life starts to feel overwhelming.

Because ending homelessness isn’t just about having somewhere to live. It’s about making sure people have the right support, at the right time, to build a safer and more hopeful future.

This World Homeless Day and World Mental Health Day, join us in taking a stand for a Hampshire where everyone has a place to call home and the support they need to thrive.

Stories rather than stats

Behind every stat you see about homelessness is someone struggling to overcome years of complex challenges. When you stop and listen, as SSJ support workers do every day, you hear common themes:

  • “Substance misuse isn’t the problem – the problem is this''

  • “Unless you deal with this, you can’t deal with anything else. So, drugs and alcohol are just a blanket”

SSJ knows that ending or even preventing homelessness starts with a person in need of compassionate but effective support – beyond the bed.  SSJ offers a range of therapies to enable a person to deal with their past. Some changes can happen quickly but many take time.  We are committed to being there for as long as it takes.

Time for action – Can we count you in?

We all know that they say it takes a village to raise a child. It also takes a community to help someone whose challenges have brought them to the street. We invite you to stand with us, to show care and compassion and a determination to see homelessness ending in Hampshire, one person at a time. So please sign up for our newsletter so we can keep you informed of the live saving, life changing work we are undertaking.
