About our Care homes

St James Care and Linden House were developed as part of the wider mission of the Society of St James. A leading homelessness charity in Southampton dedicated to tackling rough sleeping, housing instability, and long-term recovery from substance misuse. Through years of delivering accommodation services, supported housing, and outreach across Southampton and Hampshire, the Society of St James recognised that many of the vulnerable adults we supported did not simply move on from homelessness without ongoing challenges. We knew that care homes were needed, as care didn’t stop as soon as we supported people out of homelessness. In fact, for many individuals, this was only the beginning of a longer journey involving complex needs, dual diagnosis, mental health difficulties, and the lasting effects of alcohol dependency or drug misuse.

Due to this, we prioritised person-centred support at every stage. Ensuring that even after individuals were re-housed or moved into more stable accommodation, they continued to receive tailored care, holistic support, and specialist interventions. This recognition led to the purchase in 2007 of an older persons home in Radstock Road, Woolston, Southampton, which became known as St James Care. This service was designed specifically to provide residential care for former rough sleepers and people with histories of homelessness. Also, those requiring long-term, high-support environments due to complex physical and mental health needs.

A story of real impact...

Meeting complex needs

Over time, demand for specialist homelessness-informed care services in Southampton and the wider Hampshire area continued to grow. The Society of St James saw increasing referrals from adult social care teams, healthcare professionals, and housing providers, all highlighting the need for safe, stable, and supportive environments for people with lived experience of homelessness.

With waiting lists consistently full and a clear gap in provision for high-needs individuals, the organisation spent around two years identifying a suitable second property. In 2020, this resulted in the purchase of Linden House, further expanding capacity for high-quality residential care and support.

Both St James Care and Linden House operate as 24-hour staffed care homes, providing round-the-clock support. Consisting of dedicated and highly trained teams who understand trauma-informed care, safeguarding, recovery pathways, and the complex realities of long-term homelessness.

Staff are experienced in supporting individuals with alcohol-related brain injury, chronic health conditions, enduring mental health issues, and behaviours shaped by years of exclusion and instability. The focus remains on dignity, independence, rehabilitation, and improving quality of life through structured support plans and personalised care.

Accessible care without boundaries

There is no requirement for local area connection, as placements are typically funded through adult social care, reflecting the recognised need for specialist provision beyond local boundaries. Both homes are registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC), ensuring compliance with national standards for care, safety, and effectiveness.

Through these services, the Society of St James continues to demonstrate its commitment to ending homelessness in Southampton. Not just by providing housing solutions, but by delivering long-term care, recovery-focused support, and sustainable outcomes for some of the most vulnerable members of society.
